1. The Dream and the Call

​Santiago is a well-educated boy who chose to be a shepherd because he wanted to travel. He has a recurring dream about a treasure hidden near the Egyptian Pyramids. He meets a fortune-teller and an old king named Melchizedek, who tells him about his "Personal Legend" 

the goal a person has always wanted to accomplish. The king encourages him to sell his sheep and travel to Egypt.

​2. The Struggle in Tangier

​Santiago crosses the sea to Tangier, Africa. Shortly after arriving, he is robbed of all his money. Left with nothing, he finds work at a Crystal Shop. Over the next year, Santiago helps the shopkeeper turn his failing business into a massive success by introducing new ideas. He earns enough money to either buy a new flock of sheep or continue his journey to the Pyramids. He chooses his dream.

​3. The Desert and the Englishman

​He joins a caravan crossing the Sahara Desert. During the journey, he meets an Englishman who is studying Alchemy the ancient science of turning base metals into gold. Through their conversations, Santiago begins to learn about the "Soul of the World" and how to read the omens of nature.

​4. Love at the Oasis

​Because of tribal wars in the desert, the caravan stops at the Al-Fayoum oasis. There, Santiago falls in love with a girl named Fatima. He discovers a vision of an upcoming attack on the oasis, and his warning saves the people. This catches the attention of a mysterious, powerful Alchemist living there. The Alchemist tells Santiago that he must leave Fatima and the oasis to finish his journey, explaining that true love will never stop a person from pursuing their Personal Legend.

​5. The Transformation

​The Alchemist and Santiago travel together toward the Pyramids. They are captured by soldiers who suspect them of being spies. To save their lives, the Alchemist claims that Santiago can turn himself into the wind. After three days of meditation and communicating with the Desert, the Wind, and the Sun, Santiago performs a miracle and disappears, reappearing on the other side of the camp. The soldiers, terrified and impressed, let them go.

​6. The Treasure Found

​Santiago finally reaches the Pyramids and begins to dig for his treasure.While digging, he is attacked by refugees from the wars. When he tells them about his dream, one of the thieves laughs and says he had a similar dream: that a treasure was buried in Spain under a sycamore tree growing in the ruins of an old church where shepherds sleep.

​The Ending

​Santiago realizes the "treasure" was back at home all along. He returns to the very spot in Spain where he used to sleep with his sheep,digs under the tree and finds a chest full of gold and jewels.He realizes that the journey itself the people he met and the wisdom he gained was the real transformation, but he needed the adventure to understand it.
